Filmore Street, San Francisco, Ca. is a vital retail and small office commercial area with a dense residential area all around it. Small grocery stores and coffee shops abound. Note the public transit system's electric cables overhead that facilitate pollution free transit on the street. A street most other streets aspire to emulate.

Note that the building infrastructure in Lockhart, a small Texas town, like in the photo above, exists to house small retail activities as when these buildings were constructed in the early 1900s. But in Lockhart, as in most Texas towns, large and small, the downtowns are being abandoned in favor of strip development made popular by overuse of the private automobile.
